Paul Staniszewski is a juried PA Wilds artist and all of the photographs displayed in this series were taken in and around the township of Benezette, Elk County, Pennsylvania. All of the photographs, either matted and framed prints or elk note cards are available for sale through this web site or at the Elk Country Visitors Center located off the Winslow Hill Road in Benezette. The elk were reintroduced to Pennsylvania beginning in 1913. The first herd of 50 Rocky Mountain elk traveled from Yellowstone in Wyoming to Pennsylvania by train. They were released into Clearfield and Clinton Counties. Two years after the initial release program; an additional 95 elk were transported from Yellowstone for release. This was the beginning of today's elk or "wapiti" herd in Pennsylvania. The elk continue to thrive and Pennsylvania's herd now numbers near 800 elk. The elk remain in large groups throughout the winter months. They must dig through the snow to find grass, twigs and buds. They will eat the bark off trees and drink from the streams to sustain themselves for the winter. The bulls shed their antlers in late winter or early spring. Pennsylvania's elk range covers approximately 835 square miles. This range covers sections of Elk, Cameron, Clearfield, Clinton and Potter Counties. These photographs are used to create framed and matted prints and all occasion handcrafted elk note cards to provide images to enhance your thoughts or decor... Each 5" X 7" card is suitable for framing and the borders on the cards can be either white or black.
